What Moravec’s Paradox told us about AI. Have you ever wondered why AI has such an easy time doing stuff that we find very hard? But having a hard time doing stuff that we find very easy?

In the 1980s, an AI researcher named Hans Moravec wondered the exact same thing. As Moravec put it:
“It is comparatively easy to make computers exhibit adult level performance on intelligence tests or playing checkers, and difficult or impossible to give them the skills of a one-year-old when it comes to perception and mobility.”
This curious observation was later known as Moravec’s Paradox. And even though it was formulated more than 30 years ago, it is still relevant today.
