Update Table Struture using Migration – Laravel

In Laravel with the use of migration, you can create tables in the database.

Using this you can also update the existing table structure.

In this tutorial, I show you 2 ways to update table structure using migration in Laravel 9.

1. Database Configuration

Open .env file.

Specify the host, database name, username, and password.

2. Create Table

  • Create a new table Employees using migration and add some records.
php artisan make:migration create_employees_table
  • Now, navigate to database/migrations/ folder from the project root.
  • Find a PHP file that ends with create_employees_table and open it.
  • Define the table structure in the up() method.

        $table->string('email');
        $table->string('gender');

  • Run the migration –
php artisan migrate
  • The table is been created and add some records in it.

3. Refresh Migration

  • Navigate to database/migrations/ folder from the project root.
  • Open table migration file which you want to edit. Here, I am opening employees table migration.
  • Update the table structure in the up() method.

             $table->string('email',80);
             $table->string('gender',10); 
             $table->smallInteger('status');
             $table->timestamps();
      });

  • Here, I did the following changes –
    • Set the string datatypes field length.
    • Added a new column status, and
    • Delete active column.
  • Refresh the migration –
php artisan migrate:refresh

NOTE – Above command recreates the whole database and delete all data.

  • Or, you can re-migrate a specific number of migrations from last –
php artisan migrate:refresh --step=2
  • The above command only roll back and re-migrate the last two migrations.

4. Single Table

Require doctrine/dbal package to modify existing columns –

composer require doctrine/dbal

Create migration –

php artisan make:migration update_and_addstatus_to_employees_table
  • Now, navigate to database/migrations/ folder from the project root.
  • Find a PHP file that ends with update_and_addstatus_to_employees_table and open it.
  • Define the table structure in the up() method.

       Schema::table('employees', function (Blueprint $table) {
               $table->renameColumn('emp_name', 'employee_name');// Renaming "emp_name" to "employee_name"
               $table->string('gender',10)->change(); // Change Datatype length
               $table->dropColumn('active'); // Remove "active" field
               $table->smallInteger('status')->after('email'); // Add "status" column
       });
}
  • Here, I did the following changes –
    • Rename emp_name column name to employee_name.
    • Changed gender column Datatype length.
    • Delete active column.
    • Add a new status column.
  • In down() method –

        Schema::table('employees', function (Blueprint $table) {
               $table->renameColumn('employee_name', 'emp_name');
               $table->string('gender')->change(); 
               $table->smallInteger('active');
               $table->dropColumn('status');
        });
}
  • Run the migration –
php artisan migrate
  • Table structure will be updated without losing data.



5. Conclusion

You can use any of the above methods according to your requirement.

If you want to alter table structure without losing data then use the second method.

Only use migrate:refresh method when you want to recreate your whole database or use --step to only re-migrate a specific number of migrations.

How to perform migration rollback in laravel

As we know that laravel migration provides very simple way to create database table structure. We need to create migration file and write table structure then migrate that migration. Sometimes we need to rollback that migration. So here we will discuss about the migration rollback in laravel.

We can run the rollback artisan command to rollback on a particular step. We can execute the following artisan command.

php artisan migrate:rollback --step=1

Every time when we will rollback, we will get the last batch of migration.

**Note: **This rollback command will work on laravel 5.3 or above version. For the version below 5.3, there is no command available for migration rollback in laravel.

We can also use the following command to rollback and re migrate.

php artisan migrate:refresh --step=2

It will rollback and remigrate last two migration.

Perl script converts PDF files to Gerber format

Pdf2Gerb generates Gerber 274X photoplotting and Excellon drill files from PDFs of a PCB. Up to three PDFs are used: the top copper layer, the bottom copper layer (for 2-sided PCBs), and an optional silk screen layer. The PDFs can be created directly from any PDF drawing software, or a PDF print driver can be used to capture the Print output if the drawing software does not directly support output to PDF.

The general workflow is as follows:

  1. Design the PCB using your favorite CAD or drawing software.
  2. Print the top and bottom copper and top silk screen layers to a PDF file.
  3. Run Pdf2Gerb on the PDFs to create Gerber and Excellon files.
  4. Use a Gerber viewer to double-check the output against the original PCB design.
  5. Make adjustments as needed.
  6. Submit the files to a PCB manufacturer.

Please note that Pdf2Gerb does NOT perform DRC (Design Rule Checks), as these will vary according to individual PCB manufacturer conventions and capabilities. Also note that Pdf2Gerb is not perfect, so the output files must always be checked before submitting them. As of version 1.6, Pdf2Gerb supports most PCB elements, such as round and square pads, round holes, traces, SMD pads, ground planes, no-fill areas, and panelization. However, because it interprets the graphical output of a Print function, there are limitations in what it can recognize (or there may be bugs).

How to migrate single migration in laravel

Sometimes while working on a laravel application, we just need to migrate only single or specific migration. If we run normal migrate command it will migrate all the migrations written in the application. Here i will let you know to migrate single migration in laravel.

Migrations play very important role for aplication’s database structure. We just need to create migrations in the application for each table which you want and whenever we migrate these migrations. New table structure would be created.

For new developers or setting up new environment, we do not need to backup of table structure. We will just need to run the migrations. It will automatically create desired tables in the database connected from the laravel application.

We can run all the migrations using the command below.

php artisan migrate

Now if we want to run only one migration or a specific migration, we will need to define a path parameter and will need to specify the path of that migration file which we want to run like below.

php artisan migrate --path=/database/migrations/my_migration.php

It will migrate only my_migration.php file. Here, you will need to replace file name from your own migration file.

First thing, we will need a table and i am creating products table for this example. So run the following query to create table.

How to alter tables in production when records are in millions

As a developer, I have experienced changes in app when it is in production and the records have grown up to millions. In this specific case if you want to alter a column using simple migrations that will not work because of the following reasons:

It is not so easy if your production servers are under heavy load and the database tables have 100 million rows. Because such a migration will run for some seconds or even minutes and the database table can be locked for this time period – a no-go on a zero-downtime environment.

In this specific case you can use MySQL’s algorithms: Online DDL operations. That’s how you can do it in Laravel.

First of all create migration. For example I want to modify a column’s name the traditional migration will be:

        });

Run the following command php artisan migrate –pretend this command will not run the migration rather it will print out it’s raw sql:

ALTER TABLE users CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(191) NOT NULL

Copy that raw sql, remove following code:

Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->renameColumn('name', 'first_name');
        });

Replace it with following in migrations up method:

\DB::statement('ALTER TABLE users CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(191) NOT NULL');

Add desired algorithm, in my case query will look like this:
