The Ways in Which Big Data can Transform Talent Management and Human Resources

The world is facing a re-skilling emergency. World Economic Forum highlights that over 54% of people will need to re-skill and up-skill themselves in the next 3 years.

Technological Advances are Upending How Work is Done

As the world of work changes, the role of the human resource department will no longer be limited to hiring and firing. HRs will need to be better at:

  • planning training,
  • acquisition, and
  • retention strategies for their organizations.

And this is where Big Data steps in.

Big Data in HR

Big Data is about the 4V’s – VolumeVelocityVerity, and Versatility. The newly added fifth V being Value.

Average talent management and human resource department produce a huge chunk of data on an everyday basis.

  • Data from recruitment,
  • Career progression data,
  • Training data,
  • Data from employee absenteeism,
  • Performance of individuals,
  • Competency of profiles in the org. and more.

For organizations, HRs are nothing short of a goldmine of ‘people data’. In 2018, the Economic Intelligence Unit found that:

More than 82% of organizations plan to begin or increase the use of Big Data in HR. (And the numbers have gone up drastically after 2020).

Going forward, intelligent organizations and talent management professionals will drive their operations and inform their decisions through data.

How Artificial Intelligence is Changing the ATS World

The rising interest in applicant tracking systems should not come as a surprise. Our research has shown that the majority of modern-day companies do not, in fact, use ATS solutions for their recruitment needs. But this rise in interest has changed the landscape in recent years.

Recent developments seem to focus on utilizing disruptive technologies when these solutions are created, artificial intelligence chief among them. ATS solutions are becoming more popular, and rightly so. These SaaS products are capable of turning basic hiring processes into a well-defined strategy, one that requires very little effort to put in place.

A good hiring platform can help recruiters find, vet, and assess incoming talent much more effectively than keyword-focused research and LinkedIn browsing.

Beyond basic talent sourcing, AI-powered ATS solutions are able to rate and assess candidates, match them to the most relevant position and provide scoring insights into their skill, experience, cultural fit, and how likely they are to perform well in certain situations. It’s the modern way for companies to identify the most relevant and valuable talent at their disposal.

50 HR Software solutions you should know in 2021

Human Resources is all about people.

HR software is there to support both employers and employees in making their lives easier in the professional environment. From searching for the best talents to managing their salaries and benefits, to building their personalized career paths, HR software simplifies each element of running a business.

Let’s look at some of the multitude of HR tools and apps that HR managers, high-level executives, and company owners have at their disposal today.

For the purposes of this post, I divided  HR tools into groups that roughly correspond to the different stages of the employee journey — from talent sourcing, recruitment, and job boards, to employee engagement and payroll. Here we go!

Talent acquisition and candidate sourcing

These tools help recruiters find the right people for the jobs — from simple job boards to more intricate platforms that match candidates to open positions and help employers market their brands more efficiently.

#1 Upwork

A popular platform allowing companies and organizations to find freelance professionals in many different fields, and allowing freelancers to find jobs. It evolved from a simple job board to a powerful platform that matches candidates to job requirements, analyzing recruiters’ needs, and providing invoicing and payment options.

It is used by giants such as Microsoft, GE, and Airbnb.

#2 Honeypot

A European tech-focused talent sourcing platform that helps hire Software Developers, DevOps Engineers and Engineering Leaders— and helps people find jobs in IT. All job candidates are pre-verified through a code challenge and a call with Honeypot’s Talent Management team, and are offered free career support and guidance through a talent rep.

How to Decide on a Tech Stack Suitable for HR Software - App Examples

The technology stack remains a key issue in almost every kind of application you build. Projected bandwidth demand, Web app type, business goals, potential extensibility—all these variables have to be taken into account when considering the technology stack for your HR software.

The process of choosing the tech stack is no different when it comes to HR software development and is equally important to its future commercial success. Applications in that particular niche have specific demands that can best be met by a suitable composition of technology components.

Please note, however, that not all HR applications require equal scrutiny when it comes to their tech stacks. Simple apps that cater to a small user base and pack only a handful of features will most likely do well with whatever stack that adequately matches those needs.

Choosing a Technology Stack for HR Software

So what kind of tech stack would be suitable for a complex multi-user HR application? Before answering that question, we have to analyze the most important characteristics of those apps and then cross-check them against technologies able to meet these demands.

Looking at the popular HR tech applications, such as WorkdayHarvest, or Zoho Recruit, we’ll see that they all exhibit a similar blend of features and characteristics:

  • Serving hundreds of users simultaneously
  • High availability to employees, especially true for global companies with international systems
  • Scalable to accommodate a growing number of employees
  • Low latency and ability to handle high traffic
  • Ability to collect data from multiple sources
  • Ability to integrate with various external systems or applications
  • Broad range of features

How to Sell Your HR App — Good Practices in HR Software Communication

We spent the last few months a bunch of cool HR market apps, like Cooleaf or Guild. The process required top-notch software design and we hope the final product will draw large crowds of satisfied users. But first, apps like these and their features have to be presented to decision-makers in startups, SMBs or enterprises, who get the final say in whether or not they will need your HR software.

Let’s break the process down and take a closer look at what to embrace and what to avoid while creating HR software communication in 2019.

The Power of One-liners

The first thing that everyone sees and that can’t be unseen is the copywriting. I spent days browsing through tens if not hundreds of HR applications and, to be honest, I was quite surprised that Human Resources usually bring their A-game when it comes to their copy.

Catchy, prominent one-liners almost everywhere were spot on.

Peakon managed to explain their core business in literally two lines, with a pinch of social proof below.

EQ & AI in Team Performance Software

The end of June was a special time for Monterail as it marked the inaugural event of our Digital Transformation Through Meaningful Software series

(any associations with our mission fully justified!_). _

The whole idea for such a series has been stuck in our heads for quite a long time and it was high time to kick it into gear.

So, on June 24, we met in Berlin to discuss the role of Emotional and Artificial Intelligence in Team Performance Software. At the event, we wanted to address the two prominent objectives in management guidelines that seem to be mutually exclusive, namely how to introduce more human-centric management on the one hand, and automated scalability offered by modern software and AI on the other?

Finding a good balance of these two aspects is never easy, but it would seem we managed to at least partially address this issue, as you will hopefully see later on. I’m excited to finally share with you a summary and key takeaways from this meaningful event. Enjoy!

Why HR Tech? Why Team Performance Software?

Since its launch nine years ago, Monterail has been involved in building several HR tech products, including an HR administration suite and a recruitment platform. Our priority is to deliver meaningful software, and the only way to do it is by thoroughly understanding the business needs of both users and providers of such solutions.

With this event, we wanted to give a better platform to the conversation between providers and consumers of HR tech services, in order to discover needs that HR tech can solve and learn more about the latest solutions and industry standards through specific use cases. Living in the era of Management 3.0, which focuses on empowering employees and respecting their autonomy, it’s easy to take the aspect of Emotional Intelligence in management for granted.

Expert Series: The Role of Data in Employee Engagement— Peakon

In today’s world, organizations collect and use all sorts of data. And data fuels and sits at the heart of much of modern HR tools. While everyone is more or less aware of that fact, questions continue to abound about the proper approach to data and its impact on business decisions. Interestingly enough, data combined with technology can actually bring about change in areas strictly related to Emotional Intelligence, like Employee Engagement. And the impact of the latter on business should never be ignored.

Do you know NPS measuring customer satisfaction? Peakon works like that, but measures the satisfaction of your employees instead. This SaaS platform focused around Employee Net Promoter Score, measures real-time data to provide companies with insights on team performance. With the use of fourteen different psychological drivers of employee engagement, they’re able to isolate the key drivers that impact employee engagement within a specific company.

Julian shared with me great pieces of advice on how to enhance employee engagement using data, a continuous feedback approach, and excellent employee experience drivers. You’ll find out why Employee Engagement should become a key focus area in your business and how to foster it. Curious what it means to be data-inspired? Read on.

Why Employee Enagagement?

Joanna Staromiejska: We’re living in an era of AI-based solutions and while Peakon also uses AI, it does so to measure Emotional Intelligence-related parameters. Why do you consider Employee Engagement so important to companies?

Julian Tesche: If you’re an HR professional or HR Manager, you’ve probably come across your share of employee burnouts. And if I’m guessing right, you didn’t always know the reason behind it, or what it meant for the employee. It’s a problem because without a reason you’re not really able to find aid and prevent similar things from happening in the future. I see some corporations trying to encourage a better work-life balance, but things like the sabbatical that you introduced or unlimited holidays are still quite rare, despite the fact that they’re quite effective at preventing employee burnout.

Using AI for HR - Is it the Future of Work?

Saturated with ever-increasing amounts of data and robust and affordable computing technologies, artificial intelligence is branching out into more and more diverse industries and areas of life.

Business-wise, AI has the capability to improve almost every sector and almost all business functions and operations.

Helping employees and business owners make crucial analysis-backed decisions, AI software also automates workload and boosts efficiency. But can the same be applied to HR departments, which, most of all, rely on the human factor? Let’s see what AI in HR software can do.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the use of algorithms that mimic human intelligence to perform cognitive functions and solve problems through interaction, visual perception, learning, reasoning, natural language processing, and planning.

Or, in simpler words, AI makes computers capable of learning from data how to process it and adapt according to the changes in that data.

Artificial Intelligence is an umbrella term for terms such as machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, image recognition, predictive analytics, and many, many more.

Branches of Artificial Intelligence

The algorithms used in AI software remodel themselves automatically based on data analysis to provide more and more refined results to suit their designated function.

Depending on the business objective, one subset or a combination of many AI branches can be used to achieve specific operational goals.

Cooleaf—from Startup To Profitable HR Tech Product

In many organizations, HR is viewed as a cost center rather than a strategic part of the business, contributing to its poor reputation. Although this perspective has been changing recently, it still holds true for a surprisingly large number of people. To become strategically vital, HR needs to align itself better with the business and become more data-driven. Our longtime clients at Cooleaf have found a way to make HR software not only beneficial but also a crucial aspect of almost every company.

Cooleaf is a US-based mobile and Web technology platform that helps customers achieve better business results through a data-driven approach to employer branding and employee engagement. By implementing the “Leading Behaviors” methodology into their product, they managed to give company leaders a tool to track critical engagement and people-related analytics.

Right now, this award-winning app serves businesses of all sizes that seek to authentically motivate, inspire, and appreciate employees. Since 2013, it has garnered praise and recognition from companies like citi, Rubicon or WestRock. But the road to success has been bumpy.

Since beginning their relationship with Monterail in 2011, Cooleaf pivoted their business idea three times: going from a B2C health and wellness program, to organizing micro-events boosting engagement, until finally settling on selling white-labeled recognition and rewards software for corporate clients. See why they embraced pivoting as their strategy and what they do to boost their presence in the HR tech area.
