7 Tips to Master your Grad School Essay

  1. Be authentic – realize that your life story is unique and worth telling. I often hear things like “I have a regular life, there is nothing special about me.” That’s just untrue. Everybody has a story to tell, whether you are an English tutor, a marketing specialist or a soccer player, it doesn’t matter. Avoid mimicking other people’ applications, they are not YOU. Build your own brand instead.
  2. Tell a story – remember that your essay is basically a personal story of your life. For examlpe, you can write a story how you provided math homework help for your friend or brother, etc. And every good story is supposed to have an intriguing begging, the body of the story, culmination and an exciting end. Your story has to be interesting to read. Moreover, it should be memorable. If you are not sure whether your essay is good enough, show it to your friends, parents, colleagues – collect their feedback and make necessary adjustments.
  3. Illustrate your statements with specific examples – no matter whether you want to become an engineer, a diplomat or a communication specialist, you have to show the admissions committee that you have already made a few steps towards accomplishing your dream. That way the admission committee knows that you are not only capable of writing outstanding essays, but also capable of taking actions.

  4. Aim for cohesiveness and flow– this is important, your essay should flow naturally and logically; one sentence should naturally follow the other. Make sure your paragraphs are about the same size and each paragraph contains one thought. Use “linkage” words (but not too many!) to achieve a better flow.
  5. State clearly what you hope to gain from grad school and how it will help you in your professional career – the entire point of your application is to get into grad school; however, grad school is not the end of your professional career and learning process. Be specific regarding what you hope to achieve, which courses you want to take, which faculty members you would like to work with.
  6. Build a connection with a school (university) – it is always good to show your familiarity with the university or the program you are hoping to get into. Maybe you have visited that university’s campus; maybe you have gone there for a conference, maybe you have published something in cooperation the university’s faculty or ran a project together with the students…Whatever that is, it is good to mention that you have already built some connection with the place (and you are not blindly applying to grads schools).
  7. Be persuasive – the entire point of your essay is to convince the admissions committee that you are motivated, driven and serious about going through 2-3 years of grad school. The admission committee should feel your eagerness to learn! (So use definitive words when writing).
