In this article, I will discuss how to physically model an Azure Synapse Analytics Data warehouse while migrating from an existing on-premise MPP (Massive Parallel Processing)Data warehouse solutions like Netezza and Teradata. The approach and methodologies discussed in this article is purely based on the knowledge and insight I have gained while migrating these data warehouse to Azure Synapse analytics.

Problem Statement

I have migrated two large scale multi-terabyte data warehouse solutions (Netezza and Teradata) to Azure Synapse Analytics PAAS offering. During the migration phase, I learned and gained insight into some of the best practices on how to physically model the data warehouse in Azure Synapse Analytics. Before going through the implementation and best practices let’s first discuss architecture components and distribution strategies.
