AI Drug Discovery

Historically drugs were discovered by identifying the active ingredient from traditional remedies or by a serendipitous discovery, as with penicillin. Only more recently chemical libraries of synthetic small molecules, natural products or extracts were screened in intact cells or whole organisms to identify substances that had a desirable therapeutic effect. Yet, finding a successful new drug is daunting and predominantly the most difficult part of drug development. And this is caused by the vast size of the space to screen known as the chemical space — a space which encompasses all possible small organic molecules, including those present in biological systems — which is estimated to be in the order of 10exp60 molecules. So, with such big numbers, technologies that incorporate AI have become versatile tools that can be applied ubiquitously in various stages of drug development.
