QuickBooks might be the most popular business software in the world with millions and millions of users. It has been the go to accounting app for small businesses for decades, but that doesn’t mean it’s the perfect fit for every business. QuickBooks’ many versions and integrations make it adaptable to almost any situation, but what if you’re just looking for a streamlined product that you can use right out of the box? Or what if QuickBooks’ most basic plan is still over your budget? Or what if you just like working with smaller companies? QuickBooks is one of only eight products to appear on our Top 20 accounting software lists for most popular, most affordable, and most user-friendly, but there are four accounting tools that have an even higher average ranking on those three lists. Let’s take a look.

Launched in 2009, Wave has become a wildly popular, free accounting app. It has more than three-and-a-half million users and it’s a great option for small businesses looking to get started with an easy to use accounting app without spending a dime. Users love that Wave accounting is free, fully functional accounting software with no limits on transactions or users. A couple things to consider – payments and payroll are paid optional features and Wave lacks an audit trail feature, which leaves it vulnerable to fraudulent employees.

Sage Business Cloud is the next product on our list. With roots dating back to 1981, it’s one of the only products out there that can claim seniority to QuickBooks. It’s also really easy to use – Sage Business Cloud claims the top spot on our user-friendly Top 20 report. On the other hand, Sage’s interface does show its age a little bit and if you want invoicing you’ll be paying at least $25 a month. If you’re looking for an accounting system you can just pick up and use right away, Give Kashoo a try.

It might have a funny name but it’s a really solid accounting tool and it has free web and phone support, which sets it apart from every other product on this list.
Users love how straightforward yet flexible the software is and it has a nice integration with Square payments. It does however lack the variety of integrations that some of the more established products have built so if you’re looking for a tool that will seamlessly hook up with all the other business apps you already use you may need to look elsewhere Odoo a relative newcomer, rivals Wave in affordability with a free open-source option.

It has more than 1500 developers working on its open source code and has almost 4 million users. You can think of Odoo as an a la carte approach to business software; it gives you a lot for a little but if you’re not ready for some hands-on customization, you may want to try something else. The good news is that QuickBooks and all four of these alternatives offer free trials. If you’ve already used any of these products, visit Capterra and leave a review and if you want to read more about each of these alternatives and how we selected them check out our QuickBooks alternatives article.
