The best way to describe my daily work is “Data Engineering”: Code, usually in Python, go, Scala, or Java, running on a distributed cluster of different machines and/or containers, churning away at large amounts of data.

But be it my line of work or more traditional backend work (like writing API endpoints for your favorite websites and apps), at the end of the day, the software I write will inevitably run on servers that run Linux, mostly LTS-variants, such as Debian or RHEL. They run Linux because it’s free (as in cost and source), it’s stable and doesn’t require reboots
