There are a ton of programming languages in existence. Almost 700 if you include the incredibly obscure and even defunct. Currently, writing your own programming language is easier than ever and there are numerous ways to do it. The lower barrier to entry for creating your own programming language has led to a ton of new, interesting and sometimes strange languages.

Some of these unique languages have a distinct purpose while others are purely academic or even comedic in nature. Being able to write a language consisting of only two or three characters may not be the most useful thing but the journey might be worth more than the destination in this case. Learning what actually goes into creating a language from scratch and deciding on things like interpreted vs. compiled or static vs. dynamic can be a valuable experience.

While the topic of odd, esoteric programming languages has been covered numerous times before, I’ve put together a unique list of those both new and quite old. Let’s take a journey through some of these weird finds and discover languages that push some of the boundaries of programming.
