This summer during this Covid 19 crisis I have been taking a HCI course as part of my Master’s in Computer Science. As Disney World starts to open today, it’s important to look at how the investment that Disney has made in developing their Disney World mobile application will change the passholder experience moving forward. During this period it’s become apparent how Disney investments in mobile development have really paid off and will be a critical element in the future for them. This application will serve as a critical backbone to assist Disney in getting through this Covid-19 crisis.

Background on contexts in the application and how it adds constraints or challenges in using the Disney World application

The use of constraints within the Disney World mobile application allows the application interface to adapt to the environment that the user is placed within. An example of a constraint within the application is when you are located with the Hollywood Studios park; you can select a boarding group for the Rise of Resistance (Fig. 1). The application has constraints built into it where a user must be electronically admitted to the park and physically located within the park to be added to a boarding group to ride the attraction. User’s outside the park are not given the ability to obtain a boarding group number.

Another feature of the application which takes into account constraints is how the shopping experience is constrained throughout the application based on the context you are operating in when looking for merchandise. The built-in shopping experience within the Disney World application will adapt to where you are located. If you are outside Disney World you are displayed products that can be purchased and shipped to you. When you are on Disney properties, you are provided with products that are available for shipping to your resort hotel exclusive to the Disney Theme Parks. The constraints get even more granular where when you are in the context of a physical theme park you can use the application to locate the store that the product is available in (Fig. 2).
