How to prepare your CV and how to generally apply for a job.
Become a great developer: https://bit.ly/2R9Gshv

I will give you tips from an employer perspective as I’m currently expanding my team and looking for new people. We are getting dozens of job applications daily, but some of them are so bad I decided to make this video.

Maybe after following this simple advice, you will get the job of your dreams!

So, first and foremost, carefully read the job posting! The HR manager explained everything they need from a candidate in this posting. And if you follow the instructions correctly, you will have a bigger chance to get a positive response.

In the last 4 months, we hired two amazing guys to help me out with course content, and they both followed all the instructions and provided all the necessary information. But on the other hand, we received so many applications with just 1-2 unrelated lines and a very poorly constructed CV.

Coming to a CV. It has to be straight to the point. I don’t care which pottery class you took in 2008 and which kinder garden you attended. I need to see your

  • Skills (languages you speak, programming languages you know, technologies you can use)
  • Experience (projects)
  • Education + certificates

Make sure you put relating work experience into your CV; it is better to adjust your resume for every job you apply for. Let’s do a little task as an example; you are applying for the Android Developer position in Tutorials.EU, what kind of experience and skills will you mention in your CV? Post it in the comments below right now

Make sure you write relevant information, it is fantastic that you worked as a bartender as a student, but it doesn’t help me understand your coding skills. On the other hand, if you had a fantastic project in the university - mention it. It will be to your advantage.

So, let’s go to the CV tips:

  1. Keep it short (as you already got from my previous speech) 1 page is usually enough to get the most important impression.
  2. Keep the master resume on your computer (with the list of all relevant jobs and experiences) and → create a new CV for every position you apply to by using this master file as a basis.
  3. Put the juiciest stuff in the first third of your resume, a hiring manager will most probably check the very beginning, and if it looks appealing - he or she will read further.
  4. Use bullet points to highlight your experience, make sure the text is readable and easy to consume
  5. Don’t forget about the metrics! Put your numeric achievements in your CV; managers like it.
  6. Show that you can do stuff, mention what you’ve achieved in the past and brag a bit about it ;)
  7. Avoid empty words; they won’t really help you
  8. Put your experience above education; it is more important in the end.
  9. And when showing your skills, try to put them in groups, like Language Skills, Tech Skills, Leadership Skills - it will show how organized you are.
  10. Name your file smartly! Omg, do you know how annoying it is to open 10th cv001v2 or something like that? It is better to connect the file with the name, save some time for the hiring manager, and increase your chances! 2 in 1
  11. Well, and don’t forget to refresh your CV.

Hope these tips are good for you, and see you in the next videos ;)
