If you plan to have a Kubernetes cluster on top of VMware infrastructure and want to use a lightweight OS for Kubernetes nodes, you may want to use Photon OS.

Photon OS promises a minimal Linux distribution that optimized for cloud computing platforms, VMware vSphere deployments, and applications native to the cloud. In February 2021, they released version 4 of the OS.

I already have an existing Kubernetes cluster in my lab, so in this guide, we will add Photon OS as a worker node.

Head to the Photon OS download page and download the format you prefer. I prefer the OVA format since it’s smaller.

On Vsphere, deploy the OVF template and use a link from the download page (or you can download the ova and use a local file). Please note the virtual hardware version
