Modern message-passing and event-driven applications have requirements that differ significantly from traditional enterprise applications. A definite sign is the shift in focus from guaranteed delivery of individual messages, where the responsibility for delivery is mostly on the middleware, to “smart endpoints and dumb pipes,” where it is up to the application to monitor delivery and punctuality. A result is that the Quality of Service requirements on the messaging infrastructure are more about throughput than delivery guarantees; a message not reaching its intended target is something sender as well as receiver must solve, as they are fundamentally responsible for the business requirements impacted by such a failure, and are best capable of determining a proper response.
