Surprisingly for some of you, this article will not talk about political matters but something far more important. The next revolution is not related individually to space or Artificial Intelligence, if that is what you expected, but a long-awaited combination between technology and other fields of study.
The last revolution
When the first computers appeared after the First World War, people weren’t able to see the full scale of their future importance. Nowadays, technology is a part of our lives, culture, and heritage. Everywhere we go and everything we do is somehow related to computers. From how we communicate with people that are thousands of miles away in a fraction of a second, to the biggest library ever created by humans, the internet.
Why now?
The answer is pretty straight-forward. The amount of information and the depth of research in every area of study is astounding. A perfect example is the advancements in biology and neuroscience. We have almost all the knowledge regarding our body to a scale of an atomic level. Right now we aim to recreate the human genome with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We experience a time when cars start to drive themselves, rockets become reusable and virtual reality slowly make their way into our lives.
The importance of the revolution
This COVID-19 pandemic showed us we are not invincible and that we do not have all the answers yet. We are as vulnerable to extinction as any other species. The difference between them and us is that we are capable of preventing this catastrophic event. But why talking about extinction when there is no clear sign of that? All we care about is living a comfortable and effortless life without caring about the bigger picture. However, people never realize the consequences of their actions to our surroundings and overall health.
Our planet is dying. This is the sad truth that we don’t want to face. Climate change and pandemics are the biggest threats to our species in the next 50 years. We are approaching a point where our actions will be irreversible. Momentarily, Earth is our only possible home, and it is crucial to take care of it while we still can.
