Your product lever is the figurative main controls of how your product generates value to your users and to the business. If you’ve found your lever then you know that using it you will generate value. It demonstrates that you have control and that your actions cause predictable returns. Whether or not you have control of your product levers can make all the difference.

Once you find your lever, you can optimize it by learning how it works, discovering its limits, and generate as much value out as possible. Some product managers (PMs) work to find levers (i.e. product-market fit work) and others try to optimize existing ones (i.e. growth work), but either way, the process is similar.

A key part of my role at Eventbrite is to help PMs find their levers by coaching them on how to think like a scientist. The experience and results of about a dozen product teams have shown that you find and optimize levers by doing. The faster and more strategic way to do so is by playing a game of Product Darts but like a scientist.
