Connect your Excel file to Google Sheets

Let’s say you have an Excel file with advanced calculation formulas. You store this file on some cloud service and need to recurrently copy and paste values from it to a Google Sheets doc that can be easily shared with stakeholders. What if there is a way to avoid manual copy-paste and implement automatic data import from the Excel file to your Google spreadsheet? Here is the solution:

Install Coupler.io from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Coupler.io is a product to import data to Google Sheets from different data sources, such as CSV, XLSX, JSON, and namy more.

After the installation, open your target spreadsheet, go to the Add-ons menu and run Coupler.io. You’ll see the dashboard with a list of importers - pick CSV.

Now, you’ll need to copy the URL of your Excel file and enter it into the CSV URL field.

However, the URL of your Excel file differs depending on the cloud staorage platform you use.

If you use OneDrive, you need to generate the embedding code of your Excel file as follows:

If you use Dropbox, you need to get a shared link of your Excel file as follows:

Insert either the OneDrive embedding code or Dropbox shared link of your XLSX file into the CSV URL field and you can import data right to Google Sheets. For more on how to automate this process on a schedule, read this blog post.
