Smart Fill in Google Sheets is a new AI-powered feature that automatically detects patterns, generates formulas, and autocompletes columns. Google Sheets SmartFill automatically analyzes cells within a spreadsheet to assist you with data entry.
For example if you have a column of names and you’d like to get the first name of a person, you don’t have to write a formula. You just need to type the result you want and Smart Fill will recognize what you want and autofill the column with First names. The great benefit of Smart Fill is that it provides you with the formula for this. This means your results will automatically update.
Shortcut key to apply the Smart Fill results in Sheets is Control + Shift + Y.

Excel has a similar feature called Flash Fill. In this video we’ll find out what SmartFill can do and where are the differences to Excel’s FlashFill.
