There’s lots of economic data that gets published from various departments, DOL, BEA, BLS, FRED, NBER, US Census Bureau— how we can put the data together and see the people actually behind these numbers?
Over the last couple of months, we’ve seen obscenely large numbers all shown the same way — through line charts and bar charts that have a big jump. Sure, this is a good way of showing change, but it’s hard to empathize or really understand just a line. Lines make you go “Oooh wow unusual” and that’s it. I believe that this data needs to be presented in a personally relatable way (to people, places, and industries they know) to help users compare statistics across the US.
